PH enrollment in generative AI courses surges on Coursera

Filipino enrollment in Generative AI (GenAI) courses on Coursera surged 383 percent year-over-year, nearly double the global average of 195 percent and almost triple the Asia Pacific average of 132 percent, according to Coursera’s 2025 Global Skills Report.

The report emphasized Filipinos’ rapid adoption of emerging technologies and growing momentum toward an AI-ready workforce.

Drawing from its global base of over 170 million learners, Coursera’s annual report tracks skill trends across more than 100 countries.

The Philippines ranks 88th globally and 18th in Asia Pacific for overall skills proficiency, with local learners showing 29 percent proficiency in business, 21 percent in technology and 17 percent in data science.

In Coursera’s newly introduced AI Maturity Index, the Philippines places 60th, signaling strong potential in AI research, innovation and talent development, especially as the country pursues its goal of training 1 million AI-skilled workers by 2028.

According to the report, 86 percent of Filipino knowledge workers are already using AI on the job, outpacing the global average of 75 percent and the regional average of 83 percent.

The trend showed learner behavior on Coursera, with significant enrollment growth in GenAI and machine learning courses, up 307 percent; curiosity, up 74 percet; customer service, up 12 percent; and critical thinking, up 10 percent.

“From AI strategies to forward-thinking education policies, we see a strong national push to equip Filipinos with the right mix of technical, business, and human skills. Coursera is proud to support this transformation through partnerships across education, industry, and government,” said Eklavya Bhave, Coursera Asia Pacific head.

With 2.7 million users and a median learner age of 32, the Philippines is among Asia’s most digitally engaged nations.

According to the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025, 96 percent of Filipino businesses plan to upskill workers to adapt to AI, higher than the global average of 77 percent.

However, an International Monetary Fund report warns that 40 percent of jobs in the Philippines could be significantly affected by AI, with 14 percent at direct risk of displacement.
