Meralco PowerGen Corp., the power generation arm of Manila Electric Co. is calling for decarbonization, digitization and decentralization as the core pillars driving the country’s energy transition.
MGEN president and chief executive Emmanuel Rubio rallied the Philippine energy sector to embrace transformation, innovation and collaboration in building a power industry that is resilient, decarbonized and future-ready during the Giga Summit 2025: organized by Meralco Power Academy (MPA).
“Because while our generation mix is rapidly evolving―with renewables surging and nuclear energy emerging on the horizon―the true test of transformation lies in the energy ecosystem. It is no longer enough for our infrastructure to be a passive source and conduit of electricity,” Rubio said.
He said MGEN is committed to decarbonization as part of its sustainability and climate responsibility goals.
“It means reducing our reliance on fossil fuels and accelerating our shift to cleaner, more sustainable energy sources. By 2027, MGEN will breach the 1,500 MW renewable energy target three years ahead of schedule―and we are not stopping there,” Rubio said.
