Alsons Power turns to RE to boost growth

Alsons Power Group is turning to renewable energy to boost its growth starting 2025, its top official said.

Alsons Power chief executive Antonio Miguel Alcantara said 2024 was a remarkable year for the company, driven by resilience, innovation and strategic growth, and it laid the foundation for further success.

“By leveraging collaboration and a shared vision, we aim to turn today’s challenges into opportunities for a more sustainable and prosperous future,” Alcantara said.

“Our goal is to provide greater benefits to our customers, shareholders, communities, and employees, staying true to our promise to power with care,” he said.

Alsons Power made significant strides in 2024 with the completion of the 14.5-megawatt (MW) Siguil hydro power plant in Maasim, Sarangani.

It also progressed in the development of the 37.8-MW Sindangan-Zambo River power plant and the 53-MW Bago hydro power plant, which are both slated for construction in 2025.

The company is also intensifying its solar energy efforts, with plans to launch its first large-scale solar power plant in the first half of 2025.

“We are rapidly advancing our solar power initiatives and remain committed to strengthening our project pipeline,” said Alcantara.

Meanwhile, phase 1 of the company’s 95.2-MW Bohol In-Island Diesel Power Station in the municipality of Ubay is also nearing completion, marking a major step in its strategic expansion outside Mindanao.

The facility is designed to provide a reliable backup power source for consumers in Bohol, ensuring continued electricity supply during times when the province is isolated from the Visayas grid due to calamities or natural disasters.

“This project will capitalize on opportunities in the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market and ancillary reserve market over the next 3 to 5 years, until additional plants are developed to address demand-supply gaps in the region,” Alcantara said.

Alsons Power reactivated unit 1 of Mapalad Power Corp.’s (MPC) diesel power plant in Iligan City that will enable the group to further tap into the ancillary reserve market, while the Western Mindanao Power Corp. (WMPC) in Zamboanga City continues to be a critical asset in stabilizing the region’s power supply.

Alsons Power’s retail electricity supply unit also gained considerable traction, securing key clients like Holcim Philippines and Metro Retail Stores Group, Inc. with an aggregate contracted capacity of 43 MW.

The company is focused on significantly expanding its market share in the retail competition and open access (RCOA) market this year.

“We are committed to strengthening our market presence and expanding our power asset portfolio,” Alcantara said.

“Our mission is clear—to continuously provide safe, reliable, and affordable electricity while creating lasting value for today and generations to come,” Alcantara said.

“With our collective strengths, I am confident we can reach new milestones and overcome any hurdles along the way.”
