Pinoy rowers capture silver, bronze at Ratzeburg Regatta

THE Philippine national rowing team kicked off its European tour with an impressive performance, securing a silver and a bronze medal at the 66th International Ratzeburg Regatta in Ratzeburg, Germany.

Southeast Asian Games’ bronze medalists Edgar Ilas and Zuriel Sumintac powered their way to a silver medal in the Men’s Pairs Lightweight event.

Not to be outdone, Asian U23 bronze medalist Kristine Paraon and SEA Games’ team event bronze medalist Feiza Lenton earned a bronze in the Women’s Double Sculls category.

Under the guidance of newly appointed foreign coach Benedikt Schwarz, the Filipino contingent faced strong competition from national teams and clubs across Europe, including Sweden, Austria, Holland, Czech Republic, Poland, Denmark, and the host Ratzeburg Rowing Club.

These early podium finishes are a significant boost for the seven-member Philippine squad, which includes Olympian Cris Nievarez, Van Maxilom, and Rynjie Peñaredondo.

The team will continue its intensive training and competition schedule across Europe until the end of the month, with upcoming regattas in Hanover (Germany), Bled (Slovenia), and Amsterdam (Netherlands).
