‘Delia D.’ musical emerges as Filipino theater favorite

Delia D.: The Musical, featuring songs by prominent Filipino songwriter Jonathan Manalo, has quickly become a standout production in the country’s theater scene.

The show combines Manalo’s popular hits with original compositions crafted for the stage, creating a fresh narrative that resonates deeply with Filipino audiences. It tells the story of an underdog singer, celebrating the Filipino dreamer and the nation’s singing contest culture.

Playwright Dolly Dulu and director Dexter Santos lead the production, which stars Phi Palmos in the title role, supported by a cast of theater veterans and newcomers. The show is staged at the Newport Performing Arts Theater in Pasay City.

Veteran songwriter Trina Belamide called it among the best Filipino jukebox musicals, while film director Jason Paul Laxamana praised its homage to the country’s birit and contest culture.

The musical’s reinterpretation of Manalo’s songs gives them new emotional depth, connecting familiar hits to character-driven moments and weaving new originals to enhance the story.

John Lapus, returning to the theater, received praise for his nuanced performance, blending humor and drama.

Delia D. has drawn wide acclaim, selling out shows and earning standing ovations. Notable attendees include ABS-CBN executives, popular entertainers, and respected industry figures, signaling its significance in Filipino entertainment.

Award-winning actress Dolly de Leon described the production as “Philippine theater at its finest,” praising its heart and talent.
