Makati gov’t gives out laptops to mentors

THE Makati City government has started distributing computer laptops for teachers and teaching staff, along with school supplies, emergency kits, and other needs of public school students ahead of the opening of classes starts next week.

Mayor Abigail Binay led the ceremonial distribution on Thursday  at the Nemesio Yabut Elementary School.

A total of 1,410 laptops will be given to teachers and teaching-related personnel across Makati’s public schools.

Binay said supporting teachers has been a vital part of Makati’s education strategy under her administration.

“Our teachers deserve the tools to help them adapt to modern teaching methods and technology. These laptops will allow them to plan lessons better, access online resources, and manage their workloads more efficiently,” she said.

At the same time, the mayor said her administration has upgraded and expanded the benefits given to public school students.

The benefits covered elementary, junior high, and senior high school students at the start of every school year to ease the financial burden on parents and ensure that the children are equipped to begin school with confidence.

Binay also stressed that there is no reason for students in Makati not to attend classes and ask their parents for allowances because the local government provides free food at schools.

“We have Project FEED, and then there’s no more problem with the uniforms. Before, the uniform had to be tailored; now it’s free. They say, “No shoes?” Shoes are also free. So, there is no reason for parents to say that their child dropped out or did not study,” she said.

“This program reflects our vision for inclusive and quality education. We want every child in Makati to come to school ready to learn and confident that they have the tools they need to succeed,” she added.

As part of the city’s efforts to strengthen school disaster preparedness, the city also provides 13,698 emergency go bags, and more than 18,000 adult hard hats for the students.

Each go bag contains basic emergency supplies such as water, a food bar, an emergency blanket, a hand-crank flashlight, a whistle, an ID card holder, sterile gauze pads, povidone wipes, surgical face masks, packs of towelettes, an N95 respirator mask, and wound gel.

“We are not just preparing our students academically but also making sure they are ready and safe when disaster strikes. “Safety is an essential part of every school environment,” Binay said.

The city’s education and disaster-readiness initiatives are a testament to Makati’s strong commitment to the welfare of its youth and educators. The local government continues to invest in programs that promote safe, inclusive, and future-ready learning environments for all residents.
