The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) elevated its operations center alert status to code “blue” on Friday in response to a low-pressure area (LPA) detected near Guiuan, Samar in Eastern Visayas.
In a statement, the NDRRMC emphasized its proactive efforts to mitigate the potential impacts of widespread rains, flooding, and rain-induced landslides brought about by the LPA and the southwest monsoon or ‘habagat’.
All Regional and Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils, along with the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) regional offices, have been instructed to activate their minimum preparedness protocols.
These include mobilizing response teams, preparing emergency supplies, and establishing robust communication systems.
Additionally, personnel from the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), and Philippine National Police (PNP) are required to remain on standby for immediate deployment.
“Early action in disaster preparedness is vital, with the OCD’s goal to stay ahead of disasters to reduce their impact on lives and livelihoods,” the statement read.
The NDRRMC clarified that a blue alert status is issued to ensure readiness for slow-onset hazard events and to coordinate preemptive actions effectively.
