Torre: Forensics, drone tech to play key roles in modern policing

Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Gen. Nicolas Torre III is banking on modern technology—like forensics, drones, and body cameras—to strengthen crime-solving efforts in the Philippines and boost public confidence in the police force.

Torre said he will push for science-based approaches in effectively solving crimes in line with President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr.’s directive to modernize the PNP. He underscored the crucial role that advanced science and technology will play in making police work more transparently.

“Science will always play a better role in our policy right now,” Torre said in a press briefing in Malacañang on Wednesday, offering a glimpse into how the PNP under his leadership aims to take advantage of modern technologies to enhance law enforcement.

Torre said forensic science will be at the forefront of police work under his leadership, ensuring that investigations are based on concrete evidence rather than speculation. He also announced the return of drone patrols while sustaining body cameras during crucial operations.

“Body cameras will be worn by our personnel during live field operations,” the PNP chief told reporters. “Our drone patrols shall return. You will see, we are not only patroling the streets, but we are also patroling from above using drone cameras,” he added.

Live recordings will provide an accurate record of police actions, deterring misconduct and supporting evidence gathering, according to the country’s new top cop.

Torre’s focus on technology is part of his official framework to boost the credibility, responsiveness, and technological capabilities of the PNP.
