The Land Transportation Office (LTO) on Tuesday reported the apprehension of 18,934 unregistered motor vehicles or the so-called ‘colorum’ units just for May alone.
LTO chief Vigor Mendoza II said most of those apprehended in the monthlong operation last May were 12,206 motorcycles and 3,105 tricycles.
“Our campaign will remain aggressive until such time that we compel these motor vehicles to comply with their obligation to have their motor vehicles registered because it is through registration that motor vehicles are checked for road worthiness,” he said.
Mendoza vowed to continue intensifying the campaign to force errant motorists to have their expired registration renewed.
Some 1,800 vans and over 1,000 private vehicles were apprehended, while the rest included passenger jeepney, buses and trucks.
LTO-Calabarzon led the regions in enforcing the policy with 9,906 apprehensions followed by LTO-Mimaropa and LTO-Cagayan Valley.
Mendoza urged motor vehicle owners to register their cars to avoid hefty fines. He warned driving an unregistered motor vehicle has a corresponding P10,000 fine.
“This is not only part of your obligation as motor vehicle owners, it is part of your responsibility not only for your safety but also of your family,” he said.
