DOH issues mpox guidelines as cases emerge in Western Visayas, Cebu

The Department of Health Western Visayas Center for Health Development (DOH WV CHD) on Thursday reminded the public to stay vigilant following the confirmation of new Mpox cases in the country.

“Avoid skin-to-skin contact such as being in a crowded place, massage, and intimate activities with people who have a rash that could be Mpox,” the agency advised.

Mpox, previously known as monkeypox, is a viral disease caused by the monkeypox virus with two distinct clades: Clade I, which causes severe illness, and Clade II, which typically results in milder symptoms.

According to the Health Department, direct transmission may occur via skin or mucosal lesions, respiratory droplets, or intimate physical activities such as kissing or sexual contact. Common symptoms include rashes or lesions lasting two to four weeks, accompanied by fever, muscle pain, fatigue, swollen lymph nodes, and headache.

The public is also advised not to share personal items such as towels or bedding to prevent indirect transmission. Regular handwashing and use of alcohol-based sanitizers are strongly recommended, especially before meals and after touching shared surfaces.

“Workplaces and commercial establishments are encouraged to implement the same preventive measures, including provision of sanitizers, regular disinfecting of shared equipment and surfaces, and replacing towels and linens after every use,” the center said.

Authorities encourage the public to stay updated on local mpox cases and seek immediate medical help if symptoms develop.
