Senate President Francis Escudero on Thursday welcomed President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s call for courtesy resignations from Cabinet members, describing it as a “good start” toward restoring public trust and realigning government priorities with the people’s needs.
Escudero said the move shows that Marcos has acknowledged governance issues and is willing to take responsibility by demanding accountability from his top officials.
“Calling for the courtesy resignations of his official family is a good start. It highlights the need for the entire bureaucracy to recalibrate and align government initiatives with the expectations of our people,” the seasoned legislator said in a statement.
“For when (the) government fails to meet these expectations, it is the public who suffers—and I commend the President for taking immediate action,” Escudero added.
The Senate leader echoed appeals from fellow public officials to help the President implement vital programs in the remaining years of his administration.
“The President cannot implement government programs by himself. He needs trustworthy aides; he should have dependable partners,” Escudero noted.
He emphasized that the Marcos administration’s recalibration must go beyond reshuffling officials and should include distancing from allies who have, in his words, “squandered goodwill and burned through political capital for selfish ends.”
“I view this revamp as a mid-game substitution—a reshuffling of key players based on their performance. But via their ballots, our countrymen told us they want more than just a personnel adjustment,” Escudero said.
Escudero called on all sectors to support efforts that prioritize the public good over political interests, saying, “This is just the beginning. What matters now is that we all work together—not for any party or politician, but for our people.”
