Senators back road safety measures after fatal crashes

Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian called for greater accountability and stricter road safety regulations following a car crash in Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) that occurred just days after a fatal multi-vehicle collision along the Subic–Clark–Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX).

“Only with strict adherence to traffic regulations and responsible road-usage behavior can we reduce accidents and protect travelers and pedestrians. The issuance of driver’s licenses should be made even more stringent,” Gatchalian said.

The senator added that the two accidents highlight the urgent need to instill discipline and responsible behavior among road users to create a safer environment.

“Those responsible must be held legally accountable to ensure justice for the victims’ sudden and tragic fate. My heartfelt condolences go out to the bereaved families,” Gatchalian said.

As a response, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. directed Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon to fix what he called a “broken system” and ensure accountability in the wake of recent road tragedies, including those involving children.

Dizon addressed this with a set of immediate measures to improve road safety, including mandatory and regular drug testing for all public utility vehicle (PUV) drivers.

The transport chief likewise reduced allowable driving hours for public utility bus drivers from six to four, and ordered stricter roadworthiness checks for all vehicles.

Implementation of the speed limiter law and the 90-day suspension of abusive drivers reported by the public are also now in effect.

Sen. Grace Poe has since welcomed the measure, citing its importance in ensuring passenger safety amid rising road accidents involving PUVs.

She supported the proposal for drug testing every 90 days and called for more frequent terminal inspections to ensure the fitness of both vehicles and drivers.

“The safety of thousands of passengers is dependent on PUV drivers. It’s crucial that drivers are of sound mind and body before operating a vehicle,” Poe said.

However, the senator urged the Department of Transportation (DOTr) to consult stakeholders and explore socialized funding programs to avoid overburdening drivers.

“Funding for road safety must be an essential component of DOTr’s budget,” Poe concluded.
