DICT vows to improve Wi-Fi for MRT users

The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) is set to enhance free Wi-Fi coverage in all Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) stations as part of a broader effort to improve commuter experience and modernize rail services.

DICT Secretary Henry Aguda announced that the department is working with major telecom providers to boost bandwidth and expand connectivity. The upgrades will include in-station fiber networks and improved signal infrastructure, with the long-term goal of extending WiFi access inside train cars.

Initial improvements are expected to be noticeable within a month, with continued enhancements to internet speed and reliability in the coming months. The MRT-3 rollout will serve as a pilot for similar digital upgrades across other transit lines.

The agency is also exploring the adoption of cashless fare payments and improved security systems to further modernize MRT-3 services. These efforts are part of a larger digital transformation initiative aimed at improving public transportation nationwide.

While free WiFi expansion to LRT-1 and LRT-2 is still under review, DICT officials said the lessons learned from MRT-3 will help guide future implementations across the country’s major rail systems.
