Expanding sustainability footprint

Aiming to solidify its role as a pioneer in sustainable retail in the country, health, beauty, and wellness retailer Watsons Philippines is taking bold steps toward a greener future with the official launch of four new Watsons Greener Stores in Bonifacio Global City (BGC).

In an event held in Taguig, Watsons Philippines’ senior manager for PR & Sustainability Alisandrea Coloma underscored the company’s broader vision for a more sustainable future.

“Today marks another milestone for us. We believe that small actions, when compounded, can have a great impact,” said Coloma.

The BGC Greener Stores feature energy-efficient retail spaces, the use of eco-conscious materials, waste reduction and recycling programs, energy offsets, and a wider range of sustainable choices

The new Greener Stores are located at BGC High Street Plaza, Eco Tower, Bonifacio Technology Center, and Forbeswood Parklane. These branches follow the footsteps of the pilot Greener Store in San Pedro, Laguna, which opened in 2024.

According to Watsons, these stores are designed not only with energy efficiency in mind but also with a holistic approach to sustainability, from construction materials to customer engagement.

“These stores represent more than just a facelift. This transformation is not just about infrastructure but about fostering a culture of sustainability,” added Sharon Decapia, Watsons Philippines senior assistant vice president for Marketing, PR & Sustainability.

Inside each Greener Store, customers will find sustainable features such as LED lighting, inverter appliances, FSC- and PEFC-certified materials, and eco-conscious marketing displays made from Solidus boards instead of PVC. The stores also use Energy Attribute Certificates (EACs) to offset their electricity consumption, reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

Aside from the Greener Stores, Watsons also encouraged its shoppers to bring reusable bags, and through its “Recycle for Rewards” program, customers can return empty beauty and personal care containers in exchange for perks like shopping points or vouchers.

Store employees are also part of the sustainability push. Staff are trained in energy savings, waste management, and occupational health and safety, ensuring Watsons’ environmental goals are met at every level of operation.

To celebrate the milestone, Watsons hosted an eco-walking tour across all four new BGC locations. The event drew participation from influencers, media, residents, and partner organizations, all walking instead of using vehicles to reduce carbon emissions.

“This walk isn’t just symbolic. It’s a reminder that sustainability can be part of our everyday choices, even in how we move through our cities,” Coloma stated.

Watsons’ commitment to green living also includes the expansion of its Sustainable Choices product line. Customers visiting the BGC Greener Stores can now shop options that include Clean Beauty, Refill Packs, Better Ingredients, and Better Packaging—all curated to support a lower-impact lifestyle.

As sustainability becomes more than a trend, Watsons is setting a benchmark for Philippine retailers.

“We’re not stopping here. We envision a future where more of our stores across the country follow this model,” Decapia stated.
