Trade chief vows no price increase for canned sardines

Trade Secretary Ma. Cristina Roque is holding firm on the Department of Trade and Industry’s (DTI) position against increasing the suggested retail price (SRP) of canned sardines, even as manufacturers have filed petitions for a P3 hike.

“We’re still in talks with them, but we will push for a no-price increase for sardines,” Roque said in an interview, emphasizing DTI’s commitment to protecting consumers amid ongoing economic challenges.

She pointed out that most sardine companies also produce other products not covered by the SRP bulletin, allowing them flexibility in managing their revenues without raising prices on essential goods.

Roque recalled offering a leading sardines manufacturer the opportunity to expand its exports to the Middle East in exchange for its commitment to maintain current prices.

While acknowledging the manufacturers’ requests, Roque insisted on keeping essential products affordable.

“At least for consumers who are struggling, there should still be something they can afford,” she said.

She added that the DTI will continue engaging manufacturers to find ways to support their operations without hurting the public. Roque clarified that premium products not included in the SRP list can still be priced freely, but basic goods must remain within reach.

“If they have 50 products, then spread the cost,” she said, suggesting that companies can adjust prices on non-essential items instead of raising prices on everyday staples like sardines.
