After earning praise at international film festivals, “Sunshine,” the critically acclaimed movie starring Maris Racal, will finally be shown in Philippine cinemas this July.
The Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) gave the film an R-16 rating, meaning only viewers aged 16 and above can watch it. The uncut version of the movie will be shown.
MTRCB said the movie contains sensitive themes like child abuse, rape, drug use, premarital sex, teenage pregnancy, and abortion, encouraging open discussions and professional help for parents and young adults.
Directed by Antoinette Jadaone, “Sunshine” follows the story of a young gymnast who finds out she’s pregnant before the national team tryouts. On her way to buy illegal abortion pills, she meets a strange girl who speaks and acts just like her, changing the course of her journey.
Project 8 Projects confirmed on June 3 that “Sunshine” will be released locally next month and will be shown as it was originally made.
The film won the Crystal Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival and was also screened at top events like the Toronto and Palm Springs film festivals. It was recently nominated for Best Youth Film at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards.
