MMDA steps up clearing operations ahead of EDSA Rebuild

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is intensifying clearing operations along major roads, alternate routes, and pedestrian walkways in Metro Manila as part of preparations for the upcoming EDSA Rebuild Project, officials said this week.

MMDA Special Operations Group Strike Force head Gabriel Go said the effort focuses on removing illegal parking, road obstructions, and sidewalk encroachments that have long contributed to traffic congestion and pedestrian hazards.

“This is not just about the rebuild. Our clearing drive is a response to the worsening traffic and growing demand for safe and accessible walkways,” Go said.

“We are tripling our efforts—not only in Mabuhay Lanes but across all designated alternate routes from north to south, east to west,” he added.

Go emphasized that the goal is not to dismantle livelihoods but to ensure that mobility and public safety are not compromised.

In response to concerns about sidewalk vendors, many of whom have been long-time fixtures in Metro Manila’s streets, Go clarified that the agency is working to relocate them to safer, designated selling areas.

“We understand that people need to earn a living,” he said.

“But this cannot come at the cost of public safety. Sidewalks are meant to be walked on—not used as storefronts that push pedestrians into traffic,” Go added.

Go said the MMDA has identified alternative locations where informal vendors can continue their businesses legally and safely, without contributing to road congestion or endangering passersby.

“Our goal is to create walkable, obstruction-free sidewalks while also supporting our vendors in finding proper spaces to operate,” he added.

The clearing operations are part of a broader traffic mitigation strategy tied to the looming start of the EDSA Rebuild Project.

In line with this, the MMDA will also begin a one-month dry run of an odd-even traffic scheme along EDSA starting June 16 to ease vehicle flow during the construction period.

Officials stressed that clearing will continue alongside public awareness campaigns and route adjustments, with updates disseminated via MMDA’s social media and official channels.

“We are not only preparing for construction,” Go said.

“We are building a safer, more orderly Metro Manila for everyone, drivers, pedestrians, and commuters alike,” he added.
