Obiena bombs out of Oslo tilt, eyes redemption in Stockholm

WORLD no. 4 Ernest John “EJ” Obiena came up empty-handed at the Oslo Bislett Games in Norway early Friday morning (Manila time).

The 29-year-old Obiena missed out on all his three attempts at the opening height of his choice at 5.62 meters in the Norwegian leg of the Wanda Diamond League tournament.

This put him out of contention early, with his result declared a no-mark for failing to get  a valid jump.

Obiena’s failed bid comes days after a fifth-place finish at the FBK Games in Hengelo, Netherlands.

The 6’2” Obiena will now try to redeem himself as he prepares for his next event,  the Bauhaus-Galan in Stockholm, Sweden, which is set this Sunday, June 15.

World No. 1 and reigning Olympic champion Armand Duplantis of Sweden claimed the gold medal, his seventh this year.

Duplantis jumped to  a new meet record of 6.15 meters, four months after setting a world record at 6.27 meters.

Greece’s Emmanouil Karalis, now ranked world no. 2, took  the silver with a 5.82-meter clearance.

Australia’s Kurtis Marschall, currently at no. 6 in the world, settled for the bronze with 5.72 meters.
