Calvin Oftana is still adjusting to his new role with the TNT Tropang Giga, but on Friday night, he made his presence felt in a big way.
In the PBA Philippine Cup at the PhilSports Arena, the 6’5” forward tallied 22 points and played a crucial role in the paint, helping TNT cruise to a commanding 110-74 win over Terrafirma Dyip. Despite his scoring outburst, Oftana emphasized the importance of team effort, especially in controlling the boards.
“I knew I had to focus on rebounding with RHJ (Rondae Hollis-Jefferson) no longer around. But tonight, everyone contributed,” said Oftana.
TNT dominated the rebounding battle, 53-42, en route to their second straight victory. Poy Erram added 19 points, while Glenn Khobuntin chipped in nine points and seven rebounds. Veteran Kelly Williams also provided solid support with seven points and seven boards.
With Hollis-Jefferson out, Oftana has taken on a larger role in the interior. So far, he’s stepping up to the challenge.
The win improves TNT’s record to 2-3, putting them in a tie for sixth to ninth place alongside Phoenix and Meralco. It also follows their narrow 89-84 win over San Miguel Beer last Sunday.
“This is shaping up to be a tight race and a tightly contested conference,” said head coach Chot Reyes.
