Sparkle artists make their mark at the 50th MMFF

The Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) marks its 50th year, celebrating Filipino cinema with Sparkle Artists delivering standout performances in some of the season’s most anticipated films.

Ruru Madrid and Sofia Pablo shine in Green Bones, delivering strong performances that keep audiences on the edge of their seats. The film centers on Domingo Zamora (Dennis Trillo), a prisoner nearing release after serving time for his sister’s murder. However, his freedom is threatened by Xavier Gonzaga (Ruru), a newly assigned prison guard determined to keep him behind bars.

The film explores the belief that finding green bones in human remains signifies inherent goodness, contrasting with Xavier’s cynical view shaped by his sister’s tragic death in a senseless crime.

In Himala, Aicelle Santos brings vocal brilliance and emotional depth to her portrayal, offering a powerful reinterpretation of the Filipino classic. The story delves into faith and truth, following Elsa, a woman in the drought-stricken town of Cupang who claims to see an apparition of the Virgin Mary. Elsa becomes a symbol of hope and healing, drawing attention to miracles and their impact on the community.

Kokoy De Santos proves his versatility in Topakk and And The Breadwinner Is, showcasing his range as one of Filipino cinema’s rising stars. In Topakk, he plays Bogs, a character on the run with Weng (Julia Montes) from a deadly police squad, crossing paths with an ex-special forces operative (Arjo Atayde) battling PTSD. Meanwhile, And The Breadwinner Is blends drama and comedy, offering a heartfelt exploration of the struggles and joys of breadwinners navigating life’s challenges.
