Despite growing allegations of China’s “interference” in the Philippine midterm elections, the Chinese Embassy in Manila maintained that accusations of meddling were baseless and urged Philippine politicians to refrain from dragging China into local political issues for personal gain.
“We noticed the attempts of some politicians to play the so-called China card to serve their political self-interests and boost their election prospects before the midterm election,” the Chinese Embassy said.
“Such attempts are despicable and doomed to failure,” it added.
Senate Majority Leader Francis Tolentino raised concerns over alleged Chinese espionage activities in the country, claiming that “sleeper cells” are embedded in various government agencies.
Tolentino said “spies” may have infiltrated major agencies and may have even been promoted to senior positions. He warned that the country is facing a type of Chinese espionage “never before experienced” in its history.
His claims surfaced following a pronouncement from the National Security Council (NSC) that there are “indications” China may be attempting to interfere with the 2025 elections.
Earlier, the Chinese Embassy said it has no interest in interfering in Philippine elections, affirming its adherence to the principle of non-interference.
“The Chinese Embassy has always been committed to introducing the real China to the people of the Philippines, deepening understanding between the two peoples and promoting a steady development of the bilateral relations,” the Embassy said.
“We are strongly against the heinous accusation towards China and condemn the obstruction of the normal functioning by a diplomatic mission,” it added.
