Philippines-Japan space collaboration to boost disaster response, agriculture

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. on Friday announced a new collaboration between the Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) that aims to use space technology to enhance disaster response, agricultural planning, and public safety in the Philippines.

The President made the announcement following a meeting with JAXA executives during the final leg of his working visit to Japan.

“We’re working with the (JAXA), together with our very own (PhilSA), to use space technology that helps protect and improve the lives of Filipinos,” Mr. Marcos said in a statement.

The partnership seeks to harness advanced satellite technology to improve typhoon tracking and disaster response capabilities, support precision agriculture, and strengthen national resilience against natural hazards.

“With better satellites, we can track typhoons and respond to disasters more quickly, help our farmers plan smarter, and keep our communities safer,” Marcos said.

Through the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), the Philippines has previously collaborated with Japanese universities and JAXA in the successful development and launch of its first microsatellites, DIWATA-1 and DIWATA-2, as well as nanosatellites MAYA-1 and MAYA-2.
