Palace eyes safeguards against deepfakes, AI manipulation ahead of SONA

Malacañang is considering possible measures to address growing fears over deepfakes and AI-generated content that could distort official presidential communications, as preparations ramp up for President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s upcoming State of the Nation Address (SONA).

Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Undersecretary Claire Castro confirmed that while there are no finalized measures yet in place to counter deepfakes or AI-generated videos impersonating the President, the administration is taking the matter seriously.

“Currently, we don’t have any details yet,” Castro said in a media briefing.

“But most likely it will be included in the SONA,” she added, suggesting that a broader response to digital disinformation may be included in the President’s upcoming address.

The House of Representatives earlier flagged the threat posed by deepfakes, with some lawmakers expressing concern about the spread of manipulated videos that could mislead the public, especially if these falsely depict President Marcos delivering fabricated statements.

Castro recalled that the President himself recently addressed the issue of fake news in his Independence Day message, signaling Malacañang’s intent to crack down on digital misinformation.

Government agencies, including the PCO, are expected to enhance their information verification efforts and public awareness campaigns as part of a wider push to preserve the integrity of official communications in the digital age.
