PBBM raises student discounts on major railways to 50%—DOTr

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) announced Friday that all students using the LRT-1, LRT-2, and MRT-3 will now enjoy a 50-percent discount on their fares from the previous 20-percent.

Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon said this is in response to the directive of President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. to ease the burden of students and their parents when it comes to public transportation expenses.

“The President has ordered to increase the previous 20-percent discount for students to 50-percent. Starting today, the students will have a 50-percent discount and this will continue,” Dizon told reporters in an interview.

The DOTr chief said this privilege extends to all students who have valid IDs or enrollment certificates—from grade school, high school, college even including those who are taking up master’s degrees or enrolled in law schools.

In an advisory posted on its Facebook page, the DOTr clarified that the discount will apply only for single journey tickets bought on train stations and will not be applicable for stored value or Beep cards.
