Epic fail: Cop ends up in jail after inmate escapes

Caloocan City cops had to arrest one of their own after a detainee slipped out of custody, and the officer in charge reportedly did not bother to raise the alarm.

According to the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO), the staff sergeant was the duty jailer at Sub-Station 6 when the inmate got away on June 8.

But the escape was not discovered until the following evening, June 9, because the officer did not report it right away.

The officer kept the incident to himself — a choice that led to his own arrest two days later, on June 10, along Samson Road in Barangay 8.

He is now facing charges under Article 224 of the Revised Penal Code (Infidelity in the Custody of Prisoner or Evasion through Negligence). An investigation revealed lapses in custodial procedures.

NCRPO chief Maj. Gen. Anthony Aberin said the arrest is in line with a directive from Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Gen. Nicolas Torre III to crack down on officers who fail to uphold the law.

“NCRPO will be decisive in our actions against members of the police force who will violate the law. In doing so, we assure that their rights are respected and due process of law is observed,” Aberin said.
