Dispute over oath-taking order delays Senate impeachment proceedings

A disagreement erupted Tuesday during a Senate plenary session over the sequence of events leading up to the oath-taking of senator-judges in the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte.

Senators clashed on whether to proceed first with the oath-taking or allow Sen. Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa to deliver his privilege speech beforehand.

Senate Minority Leader Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III insisted that the chamber should honor a prior motion stating the oath should be taken at 4 p.m.

“It’s already 4:31 p.m.,” Pimentel said, calling for the immediate implementation of the agreed schedule.

He emphasized that the motion passed the day before clearly indicated the oath-taking must precede other business.
