More schools prod Senate to proceed with VP Sara impeachment trial

The growing list of higher education institutions urging the Senate to commence Vice President Sara Duterte’s impeachment trial now includes two of the country’s biggest Dominican-led universities, the University of Santo Tamos (UST) and Colegio de San Juan de Letran.

“Colegio de San Juan de Letran—Manila, Bataan, Calamba, and Manaoag—stands as ONE LETRAN in calling on the Senate to forthwith proceed with the impeachment trial,” Colegio de San Juan de Letran said in a statement posted Sunday evening.

The school called on the Senate to perform its duties with impartiality and to put the nation’s welfare above personal or political interests: “To suppress or disregard the process is to betray both public trust and democratic values.”

UST likewise publicized its stance on Sunday afternoon, telling the Senate to “respect the Constitution” and to “forthwith proceed.”

Earlier the same day, Adamson University also released a statement joining the impeachment call, signed by its university president, officials, faculty, and student government.

Previously, other academic institutions and individuals that released pro-impeachment trial statements addressed to the Senate include De La Salle University (Lasallian Family in the Philippines), the Ateneo School of Government as well as deans of Ateneo schools and colleges of law (Ateneo de Manila University, Xavier University – Ateneo de Cagayan, Ateneo de Davao University, Ateneo de Zamboanga University, and Ateneo de Naga University), and over 100 faculty members of the University of the Philippines College of Law.
