The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) welcomed Japan’s ratification of the Reciprocal Access Agreement (RAA), calling it a landmark step in strengthening defense ties and regional stability.
AFP Chief Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. emphasized the agreement’s role in enabling joint training, humanitarian assistance, and disaster response with the Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF).
The RAA, signed in Manila in July 2024 and ratified by President Marcos in November, outlines protocols for troop movement, facility access, and legal jurisdiction for visiting forces. The Senate later concurred with the ratification in December.
“This agreement reinforces our shared commitment to a free, open, and rules-based Indo-Pacific,” Brawner said, expressing gratitude to Japanese officials, particularly Gen. Yoshihide Yoshida, for their cooperation. The AFP, he added, remains dedicated to sovereignty while deepening its alliances with trusted partners.
