PNP, Napolcom eye 8-hour shifts for police officers

THE National Police Commission (NAPOLCOM) supports the implementation of eight-hour work shift for police officers as envisioned by newly appointed Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Nicolas Torre III.

According to NAPOLCOM commissioner Rafael Calinisan, they have actually planned to implement the eight-hour shift for policemen.

Calinisan said the NAPOLCOM will also coordinate with Torre in drafting a resolution on the matter to set it in place as soon as possible.

Calinisan also backed Torre’s pronouncement that policemen “are only human and needed rest and proper sleep,” adding that the law enforcers should also have a work-life balance.

“Its implementation will also help in maintaining a healthy body of police officers who need sufficient rest,” he said.

Torre has said his goal was to prevent sleeping on the job among the ranks, hence their tour of duty should be reasonable and within the law.

He explained that working more than 40 hours a week is against the Labor Code.
