Members of the Catholic Church, led by priests against corruption, will hold a three-day prayer vigil scheduled from June 9 to 11 next week to push for the long-delayed impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte in the Senate.
In a statement released by Radyo Veritas on Thursday, Fr. Flavie Villanueva said letting the trial commence in the upper chamber is “imperative” on the part of incumbent senators in the 19th Congress.
“Impeachment is a moral obligation. Impeachment delayed, justice denied,” Villanueva said.
Catholic priests are inviting Filipinos to unite and join the prayer vigils.
“Let us not bury justice. Let us unite, work together, and let the trial proceed—only then can we see the evidence (for ourselves), whether it will lead to conviction or acquittal,” they said.
The priests announced their position on the impeachment trial during a recently concluded forum organized by Tindig Pilipinas coalition, which involved incoming Mamamayang Liberal party-list Rep. Leila de Lima and Akbayan party-list president Rafaela David.
According to Tinding Pilipinas co-convenor Kiko Aquino Dee, nephew of the late President Benigno Aquino III, they plan to hold an ecumenical service on Day 1 of the vigil, followed by a series of prayers the next day, culminating in the reading of impeachment complaints against Duterte on the last day.
