Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Nicolas Torre III made light of his plan to boost police visibility by joking that officers should be “darker than the Chief PNP” from walking the streets.
Speaking at a Palace briefing, Torre said officers should leave their air-conditioned precincts and police boxes to patrol public areas, making themselves more accessible to citizens.
He added that those merely “chilling” in offices would be reassigned, and precincts without active investigations could be temporarily closed to put more cops on the streets.
To ensure 24/7 visibility, Torre said police shifts will be divided into three daily eight-hour tours of duty, especially in Metro Manila.
“The police presence is 24/7. That’s why I made the duty eight hours a day,” he said, emphasizing responsiveness and visibility in communities.
