The Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) set a new record last month (May) with the highest monthly passenger traffic ever, reaching 4.73 million passengers.
This number includes 2.59 million domestic travelers, which is also a record high, according to the New NAIA Infra Corp. (NNIC), the airport’s private operator.
In May, NNIC operated 26,194 commercial flights—the most ever handled in a single month.
“More people flying means more jobs, more income for local businesses, and more opportunities for communities here and abroad. Every flight helps move not just people—but our whole economy—forward,” it stated.
Since taking over operations at NAIA in September 2024, NNIC, a consortium led by San Miguel Corporation, has implemented significant upgrades to modernize the airport and support the country’s tourism and economic growth.
Four months ago, NNIC expanded its fleet of inter-terminal shuttle buses to 12, improving passenger mobility in response to increasing air travel demand.
Having additional vehicles ensures smooth operations during peak periods, maintenance schedules, and emergencies. It also allows NAIA to maintain high service standards while prioritizing passenger safety and comfort.
Originally designed to accommodate 35 million passengers per year, NAIA handled 50.1 million travelers in 2024, marking a 10.43% increase from 2023 and surpassing pre-pandemic levels.
NNIC stated that NAIA is operating well beyond its capacity, and while major infrastructure upgrades are underway, expanding the shuttle fleet is an immediate step to enhance accessibility and convenience for passengers.
Earlier this year, NNIC also deployed two new ambulances for quick medical assistance, three “follow-me” vehicles to improve aircraft guidance and minimize taxi times, and four inter-terminal coasters to facilitate seamless passenger transfers, especially for those with connecting flights or mobility challenges.
