The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) has called on local government units (LGUs) to pass ordinances that support national laws regulating tobacco, vaping, and related products, in line with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directives.
In a press release posted Monday, the DILG emphasized that LGUs must align their local ordinances with republic acts on tobacco and vaping regulations, graphic health warnings, and other related legislations, citing a recent memorandum circular.
The DILG also reminded LGUs to strictly implement smoke-free environment rules, establish designated smoking areas, and ensure the proper display of graphic health warnings in their communities.
The agency likewise highlighted the ban on the use of vaporized and non-nicotine products in indoor public areas, such as elevators and stairwells, and the prohibition on selling these products to non-smokers and those under 21 years old.
LGUs are also encouraged to coordinate with the Bureau of Internal Revenue to enforce minimum price regulations for vapor products and nicotine salts sold in local markets.
