The National Housing Authority (NHA) thanked members of the 19th Congress and President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. for the recent enactment of Republic Act 12216, which extended the corporate life of the agency to 25 years, just in time for its 50th anniversary on July 31.
NHA General Manager Joeben Tai on Sunday expressed his deep appreciation to everyone who worked on the timely passage of the law.
The measure was approved by the House of Representatives on May 15, led by House Speaker Martin Romualdez and Senior Deputy Majority Leader Rep. Sandro Marcos of Ilocos Norte.
Key highlights of RA 12216 or the new NHA Charter include a capitalization boost from P5-billion to P10-billion payable over the next decade. The NHA board will also now include two additional experts in housing and urban planning plus representatives from the following government agencies:
- Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development
- Department of Public Works and Highways
- Department of Finance
- Department of Interior and Local Government,
- Department of Budget and Management
- Department of Economy, Planning, and Development
The law also broadens the NHA’s role to build climate-resilient communities, partner with local governments and private groups, and address post-disaster housing needs through a new Disaster and Emergency Response Housing Office (DERHO).
The NHA can also now engage in public-private partnerships, pursue land banking, and issue bonds to support housing programs.
