PAGASA: ‘Habagat’ starts, rainy season within 2 weeks

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) on Friday announced the beginning of the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat) in the country.

“Recent weather analysis over the past several days has shown the persistence of low-level southwesterly winds over the western section of Luzon and the Frontal System over Extreme Northern Luzon,” PAGASA reported.

“With the weakening of the Easterlies, these developments indicate the beginning of the Southwest Monsoon… one of the precursors of the onset of the rainy season,” it added.

The agency said occasional to frequent rains and thunderstorms are expected, particularly over the western sections of the country, as the Southwest Monsoon becomes more dominant.

“This may lead to the possible onset of the rainy season within the next two weeks. Periods of monsoon breaks may also occur,” PAGASA said.

The state weather bureau said it will continue to monitor the situation, advising the public and all concerned agencies to take precautionary measures against the adverse impacts of the Southwest Monsoon, such as floods and rain-induced landslides.
