Topacio visits Teves; NBI to address public on fugitive’s arrest

Lawyer Ferdinand Topacio visited his client, former lawmaker Arnolfo ‘Arnie’ Teves, Jr., Friday morning at the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) headquarters in Pasay City, where the latter is temporarily held following his deportation from East Timor on Thursday.

The NBI is scheduled to hold a press conference at 9:00 a.m. to provide additional details amid stunning developments. Teves is accused of orchestrating politically motivated murders in Negros Oriental, including the death of former governor Roel Degamo.

“We were allowed to speak at length with our client,” Topacio was quoted saying in an ABS-CBN report during his visit. He thanked NBI Director Jaime Santiago for allowing the meeting, even describing him as “one of the few shining lights in the Marcos administration.”

Topacio told reporters Teves will be transferred to Building 14 of New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa City later this Friday. The arrested politician underwent standard booking procedures at the NBI on Thursday evening, shortly upon his arrival from Dili, East Timor.
