PNP ready to hold Teves in custody upon DOJ request

The Philippine National Police (PNP) said Wednesday it is prepared to assist the Department of Justice (DOJ) with the transfer and custody of former Negros Oriental Rep. Arnolfo Teves Jr., who was finally arrested in Timor-Leste.

PNP Chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil said the national police’s custodial facility is available if the DOJ decides to place Teves under their watch once he is deported to the Philippines.

“There’s no request for any assistance from the NBI (National Bureau of Investigation), from the DOJ. But in case (there will be), we will provide the facility,” said Marbil.

He added that the PNP can also provide security arrangements for Teves, depending on what the DOJ requires. “We still have no knowledge of the plan of the DOJ. But we are prepared to give assistance,” he assured.

Teves is facing multiple charges and has been tagged as the alleged mastermind behind the killing of former Negros Oriental Governor Roel Degamo and nine others in a brutal attack on March 4, 2023, in Pamplona, Negros Oriental.

He was arrested by authorities in Timor-Leste and is awaiting possible deportation to the Philippines.
