Humility is power: Romualdez hails Pope Leo XIV as symbol of renewed hope

House Speaker Martin Romualdez on Friday welcomed the election of Pope Leo XIV, calling it a reaffirmation of the Catholic Church’s enduring mission, a source of renewed hope, and a sign of continuity in pastoral leadership for the faithful worldwide.

“We welcome with deep joy and reverence the election of His Holiness Pope Leo XIV. His life of missionary service, unwavering commitment to the marginalized, and resolute pursuit of justice reflect the best of what the Catholic Church can offer in these times of uncertainty,” Romualdez said.

Pope Leo XIV, formerly Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, becomes the 267th pontiff and the first American to lead the Catholic Church, bringing with him a lifetime of missionary service and pastoral leadership shaped largely by his work in Latin America.

Romualdez noted that Pope Leo XIV’s pastoral approach echoes the legacy of Pope Francis, known lovingly to Filipinos as “Lolo Kiko.”

“Like Lolo Kiko, Pope Leo XIV carries the Gospel with humility and courage, entering the papacy with quiet strength. In an age of clamor, he reminds us that humility is power, and service is the highest form of leadership,” said the leader of the 306-member House of Representatives.

According to Romualdez, the new Pope’s message resonates deeply with the Filipino faithful, particularly his call for peace and compassion for the vulnerable.

“The election of Pope Leo XIV affirms the Church’s mission to stand with the poor, the displaced and the voiceless—one that deeply resonates with the Filipino people, especially as the Philippines remains the third-largest Catholic nation in the world,” he said.

Romualdez said that even Pope Leo XIV’s choice of name honors a legacy of strength and reform, invoking the memory of Leo XIII and Leo I, popes who confronted social injustice and defended the faith against division.

The House chief expressed hope that Pope Leo XIV would visit the Philippines during his pontificate.

“A papal visit from Pope Leo XIV would bring immense spiritual upliftment to our people. The Filipino faithful are ready to welcome him with open hearts and unwavering devotion,” Romualdez said.

The seasoned lawmaker asked all Filipinos, regardless of faith, to unite in prayer for the new Pontiff.

“The challenges before the world are great, but so too is the light that now shines from Rome. May Pope Leo XIV guide us toward peace, healing and renewed faith,” Romualdez said.
