The University of the Philippines (UP) rejected a proposal to allow a system-wide class suspension amid the May 12 elections.
While recognizing students’ right to vote, UP President Angelo Jimenez said he will leave the discretion to UP constituent universities (CUs) whether to conduct alternative learning modes.
“I enjoin the Chancellors and the UP Tacloban Dean to consult with their respective constituencies to decide on the suitable arrangement for their CU communities,” Jimenez wrote.
The proposal raised by UP Student Regent Francesca Duran aimed for a class suspension across all UP campuses from May 10 to 13 to give enough time for students to travel to and from their respective campuses before and after election day.
Jimenez added that UP Los Baños, through Chancellor Jose Camacho Jr., allowed asynchronous classes on May 13.
Malacañang earlier declared May 12 a special non-working holiday to allow Filipinos to exercise their right to vote through Proclamation No. 878.
