CHR marks 38 years of human rights work

The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) marks its 38th anniversary today, reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding the rights of all Filipinos, especially the marginalized and vulnerable.

Under the 6th Commission en banc, the CHR continues to expand its reach and strengthen its services.

This year’s theme, “Layag: Komisyong Nagbubuklod sa Agos ng Pagbabago,” highlights the agency’s collective push for change and progress. Among its key initiatives was Lakbay Karapatan Tungo sa Kamalayan (LAKARAN), a nationwide human rights education campaign covering all 16 regions.

The CHR also concluded a public inquiry into the situation of human rights defenders, with a focus on red-tagging cases. Chairperson Richard Palpal-latoc commended staff for their dedication and underscored the need to continue promoting transparency, accountability, and public awareness.

Since its creation in 1987, the CHR has played a key role in promoting justice, equality, and accountability. It has made significant institutional gains, including achieving ISO 9001:2015 certification in 80% of its offices.

As it moves forward, the CHR looks to sustain momentum through training programs, including its first on the Human Rights-Based Approach to Reporting, and plans further advocacy efforts under the current leadership.
