A women’s group on Monday asked the Supreme Court (SC) to impose disciplinary action against Pasig City congressional candidate Christian Sia over his sexist remarks on single mothers during a campaign sortie last week.
Sia, who is also a lawyer, received criticisms from poll watchdog and human rights groups as well as a show-cause order from the Commission on Elections (Comelec).
“Misogyny is never a joke. We have been saying for a long time that during the campaign period, we condemn the continued use of women as entertainment, as subject of demeaning jokes which has a huge implication for us women because women play an important role in election and in society, especially they should not be made ‘sex objects’ of politicians this election,” Gabriela secretary general Clarice Palce told reporters.
In its three-page letter addressed to Chief Justice Alexander Gesmundo, Gabriela said while Sia apologized for his action, “such apology is wanting of any ounce of sincerity.”
The women’s group said the candidate blamed the uploader of the video rather than take accountability and responsibility.
Gabriela said they “find Atty. Sia’s action appalling and reprehensible” and “reeks of misogyny and sexism.”
