Iloilo sets P19-m budget to roll out P20/kilo rice
The Iloilo provincial government has allocated P19 million to implement the national “Benteng Bigas Meron Na” program, which aims to provide rice at P20 per kilo.
Governor Arthur Defensor Jr. said preparations are underway, including finalizing a consignment agreement for rice supply and organizing logistics for distribution.
The rice will be sold through Kadiwa Centers, prioritizing families with undernourished children. The initiative aligns with Iloilo’s nutrition programs and may expand as the national rollout progresses.
“This is part of our broader plan to link agriculture and nutrition,” Defensor said, noting the effort also supports the province’s hybrid rice program and the national food security strategy.
Defensor emphasized that the program’s success will depend on strong coordination between provincial offices and national agencies.
