PPA says all ports ‘resilient,’ prepared for rainy season

The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) on Thursday said is ports nationwide are resilient and prepared for the rainy season.

“All PPA-managed ports were designed and built to withstand the impacts of strong storms and torrential rains brought by the rainy season. While minor damages may occasionally occur, these do not hamper our operations”, said PPA General Manager Jay Santiago.

He emphasized that the design and construction of PPA ports follow long-term plans geared toward climate resilience and sustainability.

As part of its seasonal preparedness, the PPA is conducting regular preventive maintenance activities such as environmental cleanup and drainage clearing to reduce the risk of flooding. Any damage to port structures is immediately addressed by the respective Port Management Offices (PMOs).

PPA Lugaw’s initiative which provides food assistance to stranded passengers in case of trip cancellations is still an ongoing efforts from the ports in cooperation with the LGUs during weather disruptions.

Meanwhile, Department of Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon remains clear with his order of no overloading among the ships no matter the weather.

“We will not compromise on the safety of our passengers. Our passengers will be inconvenienced but we have no choice. But that is the burden of the shipping line. We will hold the shipping line accountable”, said Dizon.

Aligned with the directive of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to ensure a safe, efficient, and reliable transportation system for all Filipinos, the PPA continues to modernize port infrastructure to support smooth passenger travel and cargo movement, especially during typhoons and heavy rains.

The PPA encourages the public to remain alert and follow official advisories during the Habagat season by visiting the social media pages of the Philippine Ports Authority with 24/7 assistance online and on site.
