Philippine Ambassador to the Czech Republic Eduardo Meñez expressed strong support for the Aurora Pacific Economic Zone and Freeport Authority (APECO) in its efforts to become the country’s first national defense hub and in building a thriving industrial and tourism site.
Following President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s visit to the Czech Republic in early 2024, APECO officials held meetings with business leaders in Prague and Brno from Nov. 25 to 28, 2024.
APECO’s new management is aligning its goals with the President’s agenda for national security, food security, and energy security.
Meñez said APECO’s development as a defense hub aligns with the Philippines’ long-term security goals and strengthens ties with the Czech Republic, known for its defense innovations.
“APECO’s initiative is vital for enhancing our defense capabilities and ensuring the security of our people,” he said.
Strategically located in northeast Philippines with access to the Pacific Ocean, APECO is positioned to host defense industries and engage in export activities.
Its potential to accommodate defense installations and military training makes it a major player in the country’s defense strategy, particularly with the recent Self-Reliant Defense Posture Act (SRDP).
“Investing in APECO is investing in the Philippines. We must enhance our defense capability to protect our sovereignty,” said APECO president Gil Taway IV .
The Philippine Embassy in Prague is collaborating with the Czech government and business groups to explore cooperation in defense technology and capacity building.
