Chemical maker in Batangas gets metrology training

K-More Philippines Inc., a chemical manufacturing company for the printing industry in Batangas, received training on the fundamentals of metrology and basic calibration principles from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST)-CALABARZON.

The training, held on Nov. 27, 2024 in Sto. Tomas, Batangas, focused on non-automatic weighing instruments, pH meters, and thermohydrometers.

It was designed to enhance the skills of company managers and staff in identifying equipment errors, addressing inaccuracies, and ensuring measurements fall within acceptable ranges. This aims to improve equipment performance and overall operational efficiency.

Julius Regoroso, science research specialist II, and Mylene Lontoc, project technical specialist I, of the DOST-CALABARZON Regional Metrology Laboratory (RML), facilitated the training.

They covered metrology and measurement, categories of metrology, metrological traceability, and the application of the International System of Units (SI).

Regoroso emphasized the crucial role of accurate measurement in ensuring product quality and optimizing production output. He stressed the importance of regularly verifying equipment, noting that scales can drift over time and may provide inaccurate readings if not properly maintained.

His discussion also touched on the calibration of non-automatic weighing instruments (NAWI), including different types of NAWI, classifications of International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML) test weights, and general aspects and steps on calibration.

The firm provided samples of electronic balances and test weights for equipment verification demonstrations. Participants performed calculations to determine whether measured weights fell within acceptable ranges, using formulas and techniques explained by Regoroso.

Lontoc led the discussion on the theory, fundamental concepts, and calibration process of pH meters. She defined pH, explained its significance and core principles, and provided an overview of the components and underlying theory of pH meters.

Lontoc outlined a step-by-step calibration procedure, offering insights into correct techniques and best practices.

The training also covered the introduction to humidity and hygrometers, including a definition of humidity and an explanation of its three main measurements, with an emphasis on the importance of understanding relative humidity.

The impact of humidity on various factors such as animals, plants, human comfort, electronics, building construction, and industrial processes was explained. Methods for measuring humidity using a hygrometer were also outlined, along with an in-depth overview of its classifications, types, and applications.

The resource speakers also shared information on humidity zones and ratings, along with tips for proper humidity measurement, troubleshooting, and techniques for calibrating hygrometers.

K-More Philippines Inc.thanked DOST-CALABARZON for the valuable insights and comprehensive explanations provided to their staff. They expressed appreciation for the practical knowledge gained, which would be instrumental in enhancing their operations.
