About 22 percent of Filipinos feel insecure about their property rights, with many facing difficulties in paying rent, mortgages or property taxes, according to the 2024 Prindex report.
Globally, the report, based on data from 108 countries, shows that 23 percent of the global population feels insecure about their property rights, a sharp rise from 19 percent in 2020.
Prindex, is the first global initiative focusing on measuring perceptions of property rights. It provides a baseline for land tenure security, fostering a global movement to secure property rights for billions.
It said 1.1 billion people globally feel insecure about their property rights, a 239 million increase in four years. In high-income regions, 9 percent cite unpaid rent or mortgages as the main cause of insecurity, particularly in North America and Europe.
It said that in East Asia and the Pacific, an additional 176 million people report insecurity, with China driving the surge.
The report represents the first comprehensive global study tracking tenure insecurity over time, offering a deep dive into the causes of these perceptions and their implications for global policy.
