In the heart of Palawan’s breathtaking landscapes, Discovery Coron is setting a new standard for eco-friendly hospitality, thanks to the pioneering efforts of EcoConserve leaders headed by Joegil Magtanggol Escobar (hotel manager) and by Michael Joshua Wong, MD OH (resort doctor/EHS&S manager), and his dedicated sustainability team.
I spoke with Dr. Josh Wong about their sustainability efforts. He stressed the need for stronger conservation in Palawan and highlighted the resort’s initiatives, including coral and sea turtle conservation, tree planting, clean-ups, education programs, and partnerships with government and NGOs.
Discovery Coron protects marine life through a 200-meter marine protected area, managed with the Philippine Coast Guard and PNP Maritime Group. Efforts include coral reef rehab, fish surveys, sea turtle tagging, and monitoring dugongs and seagrass habitats.
The resort’s conservation model includes community involvement and cultural preservation, promoting sustainable practices and traditional ties to the marine environment for long-term ecological balance.
Discovery Coron supports local communities through employment, sustainable sourcing, and social initiatives. With 70 percent of staff from Palawan, the resort boosts local livelihoods and sources handmade goods and produce from nearby artisans and farmers.
The resort runs livelihood programs like “Bilin nga Ani” and “Adopt a Biik” to support local farmers, while also prioritizing education through school partnerships, donation drives, and the “Cheers for Chairs” initiative. These efforts, in collaboration with local governments, reflect its commitment to long-term prosperity in Coron.
No easy feat, Discovery Coron masterfully strikes a harmonious balance between luxury tourism and environmental responsibility.

Future expansions will follow green building practices, using energy-efficient designs and eco-friendly materials. The team also plans to roll out sustainability programs aligned with Discovery’s global standards, reinforcing its commitment to innovation and responsible growth.
