Even without swinging her racket, tennis sensation Alex Eala has climbed two spots in the latest Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) rankings, moving up from No. 75 to No. 73.
This jump comes just a week after the 19-year-old Filipina’s remarkable performance at the Miami Open, where she stunned top-ranked WTA players to reach the semifinals. Her rise in the rankings was aided by other contenders failing to defend their points in last weekend’s tournaments.
Eala now holds 894 ranking points and boasts a solid 14-8 win-loss record, along with earnings of $372,640 (approximately ₱21.3 million) just three months into the 2025 season.
Following her breakthrough run in Miami, where she scored impressive victories over three Grand Slam champions, including Australian Open winner Madison Keys and four-time French Open champion Iga Swiatek, Eala is riding a wave of momentum.
Though she eventually fell short against world No. 4 Jessica Pegula in a hard-fought semifinal (6-7, 7-5, 3-6), her performance solidified her status as one of the sport’s rising stars.
Eala has also fully recovered from the ankle injury she sustained during that semifinal match.
In a recent interview on Power and Play, Eala shared her upcoming schedule: she will next compete at the WTA 125 Oeiras Ladies Open in Portugal from April 14 to 20, followed by the prestigious WTA 1000 Mutua Madrid Open in Spain from April 22 to May 4.
“So, my next tournament is in Portugal and then I’ll be in Madrid, along with a couple of other clay tournaments I need to sort out before Roland Garros,” said Eala, beaming with confidence after her recent ranking boost.
Eala said she had to take a few days off to recover, but she will be back “on court, fully normal, and everything is fine.”
Thanks to her new ranking, Eala is now eligible for direct entry into major tournaments—including the French Open, the second Grand Slam of the year—set to take place from May 25 to June 8 at Roland Garros Stadium in Paris.
