Metro Retail Stores Group Inc. (MRSGI) is expanding in the Visayas through new developments in the rapidly growing Leyte, Samar and Negros Occidental provinces.
MRSGI said in a disclosure to the stock exchange Thursday it is planning to construct new stores in Catbalogan, Samar and Hinigaran, Negros Occidental.
“We are excited to bring modern retail services to communities that have long been underserved,” said MRSGI president and chief executive Manuel Alberto.
“As the economies of regions like Negros Occidental and Eastern Samar continue to grow—bolstered by impressive GDP expansions and strong performance in key sectors like retail, construction and tourism—MRSGI is capitalizing on these opportunities. Through our strategic partnerships with local and provincial governments, we are not just expanding our retail footprint; we are creating hubs of opportunity that provide jobs, services, and economic growth to the region,” he said.
MRSGI is initially developing a two-story retail building in Catbalogan, Samar, with a supermarket and department store. The second phase will include a two to three story mall.
The project also includes a convention center, a government center and a transport terminal, all of which have been handed over to the local government. A hotel is planned as part of the development to attract tourists.
MRSGI is working with the local government on a 6,000-square-meter retail complex in Hinigaran, Negros Occidental.
The three-story building will include a home improvement section, a supermarket, and retail spaces for local businesses.
The project aims to meet the needs of nearly 100,000 people and will be connected to the nearby Ceres Bus Terminal for easier access.
“These developments reflect MRSGI’s commitment to enhancing retail access, fostering community development, and strengthening regional infrastructure,” said Sherisa Nuesa, MRSGI chairperson of the board of directors.
MRSGI operates 70 branches across Luzon and the Visayas under various formats, including Metro Supermarket, Metro Department Store and Super Metro Hypermarket.
The new developments are part of MRSGI’s plan to expand its retail network and support regional growth.
