Japan tobacco bares big solar rooftop facility

Japan Tobacco International, one of the biggest tobacco companies in the world, formally unveiled a new manufacturing plant in Batangas powered by a 4.77-megawatt solar rooftop, one of the largest projects worldwide.

Solenergy Systems Inc. installed the solar rooftop system which JTI is running at the peak energy generation of 4.77 MW.

Kira Lok of Solenergy marketing and business development team said JTI expects to save around 6,500,000 kilowatt hours of energy every year. He declined to give the figure on cost savings due to confidentiality issues.

JTI’s rooftop solar PV system is the largest in Southeast Asia and one of the biggest in the world.

“The manufacturing plant’s solar PV system has a 4.77-MW peak capacity power generation. To date, among self-consumption solar power systems within Southeast Asia, no other system is of this scale,” Lok said.
